Once you've had deep teeth cleaning and you get regular cleanings, how often do you need deep cleaning again?

With the advance of dental technology, deep teeth cleaning appears to be an additional new revenue enhancement procedure for dentists. Once this procedure is done, and one has their teeth cleaned regularly every 4 to 6 months accompanied by daily tooth brushing, etc., how often, [at what intervals] if ever, does this deep cleaning procedure need to be done again under normal routine circumstances?

Once you%26#039;ve had deep teeth cleaning and you get regular cleanings, how often do you need deep cleaning again?
Once you%26#039;ve had a deep root cleaning - if you start (or continue) flossing - and use a water pick and brush twice a day - you should be able to get your gums in great shape - and you won%26#039;t need another deep root cleaning at all. However - after the deep root cleaning - you may need %26quot;perio%26quot; cleanings for awhile - which are a bit deeper than just the regular cleaning you have twice a year.

Good luck!
Reply:Deep cleaning is nebulous to me. Never heard the term. If it%26#039;s the thing with the circular brushes, you probably need to see a dentist twice a year. As usual. If you don%26#039;t eat much, hey. No problem.
Reply:Deep cleanings (or Root Planing) is not a revenue enhancer by any means....it%26#039;s a way to keep you from having to see the periodontist for gum surgery and it%26#039;s been around a very long time. As long as you stay on top of your brushing and flossing (flossing%26#039;s the big one) and you go in for recalls every 3-6 months then you should be OK. People often %26quot;slack off%26quot; on their at-home maintenance and plaque can harden into calculus in less then 24 hours!!! Most people don%26#039;t know that. I had a deep cleaning a year and a half ago.....and even though I work in a dental office....I%26#039;m a serious slacker in the floss department....I know, I know ;). So I just had a cleaning and my pocket measurements taken and I had a few 5mm pockets....not good....I need another deep cleaning to keep me away from the dreaded periodontist.
Reply:Deep cleanings or scaling and root planing are not at all an additional procedure to increase revenue for a dental office, but are often the last resort to save you teeth and preventing further destruction to your gum tissue and bone before sending you to a specialist (Periodontist). A deep cleaning can only attribute to about 10% of your oral health, the other 90% is up to you at home maintaining your oral health. What that means is I can go and do a deep cleaning procedure on you, removing all plaque, bacteria and excessive tartar or calculus buildup, in turn starting you on the path to good oral health and stopping the destruction of your gums, bone and supporting tissues...BUT if you, as a patient do not do your part at home, by maintianing good oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing, using a rinse if necessary, then the bacteria will just reproduce in your mouth again, you will have excessive buildup and destruction to your supporting structures again, and will need another deep cleaning...make sense?

In order to ensure that you are on the path to good oral hygiene and halting the destruction of the supporting oral structures you need to have Periodontal Maintance cleanings done. I recommend to my patients that they come in every 3 months until I am certain that everything (the periodontal or gum disease) is under control. After that I move them to a 4 month recall to ensure that they do not start slacking at home, and once I am sure everything is nice and healthy, I may move them to a 6 month recall, although some may never go on a 6 month recall due to poor home care.

I hope this helps you to understand that deep cleanings and more frequent recalls after deep cleanings is for your benefit to ensure that you retain your teeth and do not lose them to gum or periodontal disease. Good luck and don%26#039;t forget to brush and floss often!
